passport as security

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone knows if you need to give the hotel your passport as a form of security during your stay? A friend of mine said that she was asked to give her passport at all her hotels when travelling in Europe. Is it the same in the USA?

I am a bit weary of giving my passport as security as I have a friend who works for Australian Customs who told me NEVER to let me passport out of sight.

I have a credit card that I鈥檓 happy for the hotels to take an imprint of - is this enough?

Thanks

you may have to show it to confirm your identity, but you should never be asked to leave it. a credit card is enough for a security deposit.

Just show ID and credit card and you%26#39;re good to go.

You will need a picture ID to check in but I never heard of a hotel that asked to keep a passport. Keep it in your room safe or safe deposit box.

While passports are commonly retained by the hotel during your stay in Europe, I don%26#39;t believe it ever happens in Vegas- so don%26#39;t worry about it. You will be asked to show an ID on arrival , but the hotel will not keep it.
