I%26#39;m considering renting a vehicle when in Las Vegas and want to know if it would be worth it or should I just use the monorail, taxi cabs, or other public transportation?
I would like to visit other areas of Nevada that are close by if it is worth a day trip.
Day Rental Car
Well the monrail only goes up and down the strip, and a round trip taxi ride out to anywhere off strip will cost more than a rental; so what is the question?
Day Rental Car
If you are staying more than 2 days I%26#39;d say rent a car. Parking at any strip casino is free. So you park at one end and see those hotels and do the opposite a different time.............Or take a 1/2 hr trip to see Hoover Dam....(def worth it)..............I still take taxi%26#39;s when drinking...........but I always rent a car...........PS Enterprise is usually the cheapest. And I%26#39;ve checked them all..........Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Avis etc. I was just there a few weeks ago and rcvd a free upgrade also.
I always rent a car in Vegas because I find it very convenient-especially since I do spend some time off strip. You can usally avoid driving on the strip by using the back and side roads. Self- park and valet parking is free(tip for valet parking). A car is a blessing during the summer.
I don%26#39;t like waiting for crowded slow buses, paying for cabs or taking the hikes to the monorail stations. You will do a lot of walking even with a car but it does cut down on the miles you will walk.
If you want to take a day trip- the best is Hoover Dam/Lake Mead/Valley of Fire. VOF has spectacular scenery that will take your breath away. It has long and short hiking trails. You can take water and food because they have picnic areas. It is a fabulous trip.
You go through it quickly or you can spend most of the day there.

Another nice trip would be Red Rock Canyon. It is not as spectacular is VOF but it is still worth a visit. There is a 13 mile loop you can drive through with pull off points so you can get out of the car. It also has hiking trails and Indian rock writing. It is closer to the strip than VOF.

Once you have the car you can easily visit other off stip attractions, casinos and restaurants.
If you do rent a car (I have used Thrify and Dollar with no problems)-keep checking the rates. They sometimes go down and then you can cancel and rebook at the lower rate. You can also joing Dollar Express or Blue Chip to save time- the paperwork will be done before you arrive.
I also normally rent a car, but you should know that traffic can be tough, so if you are not accustomed to heavy traffic or driving in unfamilar places it may not be for you. If you do rent a car make sure you study some maps so you can take streets that parallel the Strip so that you don%26#39;t get stuck in Strip traffic.
Depending on where you are staying if you figure the cost of a taxi to and from the airport renting a car can be cost effective.
I rented a car for our day in LV next week from Priceline.com. I got a rental rate of $20, but it comes to $32 with all taxes/fees, etc.
I did this because it sounded like it woul dbe cheaper than the Taxi to/from the airport, lol.
Now, I have a question to tack on here- where should we park for a day on the strip where we can walk around but not get stuck in traffic?
We rented a car and it was well worth it. $12 per day from Priceline and valet parking is free and fast. There is no way we could have covered the same amount of hotels and area if we had taken public transportation and walked the strip between hotels. We also noticed at night the lines for the taxis were long and the valets were fast and just a $2 tip.
