The group we are going with has decided to stay at the Riv. Not my first, second or even third choice, but want to make the best of it. The reviews here are mixed. It seems some rooms are really bad and others are tolerable, and often the front staff is not very cooperative. How do I go about getting one of the better rooms? I am able to get a good price on travelocity but was wondering if booking directly with the hotel, though more expensive, will garner me a better room. Have comitted to staying at the Riv so please no ';stay elsewhere'; options please.

I believe if you mention the rate you have via travelocity, you will have it matched and if you book direct you have a better chance for an upgrade when you arrive.

Sorry. Your group made the wrong choice in a sea of right ones...Good luck and just hope you don%26#39;t get automated check-in and actually get to deal with a human.
Is there any particular portion of the hotel that is newer/better than the other that I sould request for my room?
Ask for a room in the Monaco tower. My buddy who has stayed there says those rooms are OK.
Thanks for the replies. I%26#39;ve always stayed in the newer properties (MB, Belllagio, CP) so I%26#39;ll look at this trip as an opportunity to see the old Vegas. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
BAIL, NOW
You can get Imperial Palace for the same money, and a much better location, near a lot of great places to eat, and more to see.
Imp smokes the Riv on user reviews, and the location is much better...but the cost is comparable
Same with Hooters, great south strip location...low price
