Hi all,
Seeing as Vegas has always been one of my ';must see'; places, I%26#39;ve decided to get my act together and managed to get what I consider to be a bargain flight there (albeit in November). I%26#39;m looking at a hotel called Fitzgeralds in Fremont Street. Is Fremont Street a good bit away from the Strip? Is that area ok to walk about alone in?
Heading for Vegas
Fremont St is the main street of what is referred to as %26#39;Downtown Las Vegas%26#39;. This is the area of the original city which was there decades before the Strip was even thought of. In the last ten years it%26#39;s been dramatically redeveloped with several blocks being covered by a canopy containing a dramatic nightly light show called the Fremont Street Experience. The area within FSE is totally safe and there%26#39;s a lot of hotels and casinos within easy strolling distance. I wouldn%26#39;t stray more than a block or so away after dark though as it%26#39;s a bit seedy.
Lots of people love Downtown but for a first visit I believe you should definitely stay on the Strip to maximise the whole Vegas experience. The northernmost point of the Strip is about two miles south of Downtown (don%26#39;t walk between these two points - not a great neighborhood) and stretches a further 3 1/2 miles southwards.
You won%26#39;t get the accommodation bargains on the Strip that you get Downtown but the standard of hotel is generally a step up from the Fitz. Have a look at some of the better value options like Barbary Coast, Monte Carlo or Flamingo. All these are in great locations close to what is referred to as %26#39;Center Strip%26#39; right at the heart of the action.
Do plenty of research before your trip. You%26#39;ll get more good advice from this forum than you%26#39;d imagine possible. Happy planning!
Heading for Vegas
Many thanks Blagger, your comments have been noted and I appreciate your advice.
Fitzgeralds is a dump. Down town is nice to see but I wouldn%26#39;t stay there being it%26#39;s your first trip there.
Stay in between the Wynn and The Mandalay Bay on or just off the strip. You will be in a much better area for getting around on foot and a much safer area as well.
